Bridgerton Queen Charlotte Spinoff: Everything We Know About the Shonda Rhimes Series

Culture

For those of you who binged all of Bridgerton last holiday season and started off 2021 feeling absolutely devoid of steamy romance, you’re in luck. We already know Netflix has produced a second season of the show and has renewed the fan favorite for a third and fourth season. But here is even better news: They’re expanding the Bridgerton universe with a completely new spinoff of the universe.

The new series, written by Bridgerton executive producer Shona Rhimes, will focus on Queen Charlotte and will look into her life as a young woman before she married King George III.

“All Hail The Queen!,” Netflix wrote. “Thrilled to announce we’re expanding the Bridgerton universe with a limited series that will tell Queen Charlotte’s origin story—the series will also feature young Violet Bridgerton and young Lady Danbury.”

“Many viewers had never known the story of Queen Charlotte before Bridgerton brought her to the world, and I’m thrilled this new series will further expand her story and the world of Bridgerton,” said Netflix head of global TV Bela Bajaria. “Shonda and her team are thoughtfully building out the Bridgerton universe so they can keep delivering for the fans with the same quality and style they love. And by planning and prepping all the upcoming seasons now, we also hope to keep up a pace that will keep even the most insatiable viewers totally fulfilled.”

Rhimes is very skilled when it comes to writing royal stories and building out worlds and kingdoms; don’t forget, she co-wrote Princess Diaries 2: A Royal Engagement (2004). Queen Charlotte’s life in very real England might not look exactly like Mia’s in very fake Genovia, but that doesn’t mean we won’t get at least one catchy musical number (a girl can dream).

That last bit is total speculation based on a dream to see Julie Andrews perform like she did in the Princess Diaries sequel, but here’s what we do know about this new Bridgerton spin-off.

The show won’t just focus on young Charlotte.

The storyline will focus on more than one adult in the Bridgerton universe. Deadline confirms that the show will also feature details about the lives of Violet Bridgerton (played by Violet Gemmell) and Lady Danbury (Adjoah Andoh).

Details about casting for the roles of young Charlotte, young Violet, and young Lady Danbury have not yet been released.

Rhimes will have a big hand in it.

Rhimes had an EP role on Bridgerton, which was written by series creator Chris Van Dusen and his team of writers. But Rhimes will handle the writing for the show and also executive produce with Betsy Beers and Tom Verica. Rhimes has her hands in a lot of projects these days, so it’s pretty special that she’s taking on this one.

Queen Charlotte’s back story won’t be all new.

Charlotte was a real monarch, though she wasn’t in the original Julia Quinn books. She was introduced as a character in the Netflix series, and this gives Rhimes the chance to take her story where she wants. She will also reportedly be focusing on her love affairs and the things she did before she married (the also very real) King George III.

By now, we know about Bridgerton’s colorblind casting approach, but some historians believe Queen Charlotte was biracial. This idea could also give Rhimes the room to explore some themes of race as it relates to the monarch’s story.

We might have to wait a while for this one.

There is no release date set for this series yet, but Netflix already has season 2, 3, and 4 lined up. Depending on how Netflix wants to roll things out, this series could come at any point, but when it comes to their hit series, they tend to draw things out to keep their fans hanging on.

Guess we need to sit tight until Shonda tells us more!
