One of my personal favorite things about floor routines in collegiate gymnastics, besides the cool choreography and powerful tumbling passes, is when gymnasts use popular songs that bring the performance to the very next level of entertainment. University of Washington senior Geneva Thompson‘s floor routine features “Lose Control” by Missy Elliott, “Goodies” by Ciara, and bits of Beyoncé’s “Run the World (Girls)” and “Upgrade U.” Three iconic artists with hits that never get old!
In the Feb. 14 performance seen above, Thompson scored a near-perfect 9.9, tying a career-high for her. She opened up with a double backflip and landed a solid front handspring into a front layout with one-and-a-half twists called a “Rudi” to finish. Thompson actually first debuted this floor routine for Washington during her sophomore season, and we love how expressive and commanding her dancing is.
Thompson competes on bars and vault today, April 2, at Regionals. Good luck out there!
